Pescara is the most convenient airport for Abruzzo. Rome's airports offer more international connections — a hire car from Rome reaches most of Abruzzo in under 2 hours.
Trenitalia connects Rome Tiburtina to Pescara Centrale in about 3 hours. Regional trains reach Sulmona, Lanciano and Vasto. Buy tickets on the Trenitalia app and always validate before boarding.
Intercity and Frecciabianca tickets are cheaper booked 3–7 days ahead. Regional trains have no advance discount.
Regional train tickets must be stamped at the yellow machines on the platform before boarding — fines are issued.
Bikes are allowed on most regional trains (€3.50 supplement). Fold-up bikes travel free. Check trenitalia.com for specific services.
Driving is the best way to explore Abruzzo. The A24 motorway goes from Rome to L'Aquila; the A25 continues to Pescara. Mountain roads are well maintained but require care in winter.
A car is strongly recommended. Public transport connects the main cities but misses most villages, trails and thermal baths.
